I’m trying to scrub the rust off my CSS skills, so you may see some wonkyness here over the next few days. Add to the mix the fact that I have no friggin’ idea how Textpattern works, and you got yerself the beginnings of a bug cocktail.

I don’t really have a design in mind, so I’ll be improvising until I hit something that turns me on.

Came across these devices via matrixsynth. This is the kind of alien technology that really makes me regret not sticking with the EE program. These things are beautiful little boxes of electronic Other-ness, and are chock-full of lovely and terrible noises. Some of them are available as kits, too, so it may be time to warm up the old soldering iron.

Take a look around the site, there’s a fair bit of interesting philosophy/metaphysics mixed in with the tech.

CDM is running a great article covering the current crop of DRM-free online music retailers. There are a few in their list I wasn’t aware of, but will certainly be looking into.

As both a creator and a consumer of music, I have a deep interest in this topic, and very strong feelings about it: namely, DRM sucks. I won’t go into all the short- and long-term issues with DRM, there’s plenty of reading to found via your friendly neighborhood search engine. If you don’t currently have an opinion on the matter, I’d encourage you to do some research and form one.

Speaking for myself, I don’t buy encumbered music, and while I haven’t released anything professionally, I can’t imagine that I would ever do so via a DRM-encumbered format or channel.

These are SFW, but I’d advise watching them late at night in a darkened room, with your back to an open window, the sound turned way up, and your feet in a pan of water.

Gen-X'er, aging hipster, geek, musician, whatever. Pick a label that makes you comfortable.
